Colesterolo: cosa c'è da sapere.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is an essential fat , mostly produced by the body and partly obtained from the diet.
It performs vital functions , such as digestion through bile, the production of vitamin D for bone health and the construction of cells, particularly in the nervous system.

It is a precursor of hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. Transported in the blood by lipoproteins, it is divided into “bad” LDL, which can cause atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and “good” HDL, which removes harmful cholesterol. Hypercholesterolemia can also affect children, especially for genetic reasons.

Cholesterol is produced by the body for 80% and the rest comes from the animal diet. A correct balance is essential, but genetics, poor diet, disease, smoking and inactivity can cause hypercholesterolemia.

Cholesterol Control Diet

Diet plays a key role in controlling cholesterol levels.

The Mediterranean diet helps control cholesterol.
It is recommended to consume vegetables, cereals and legumes to protect the heart. It is recommended to have 2-4 portions of legumes per week, 2-3 portions of vegetables and 2 of fruit per day.

It is important to limit fats , not only in condiments but also in sausages, cheeses and eggs, so as not to compromise cholesterol levels.
Favor low-fat dairy products and increase fiber with legumes, vegetables, whole grain breads, and grains such as oats, barley, and spelt.

Preferred lifestyle

For a healthy lifestyle, it is essential to not smoke , practice aerobic sports to increase 'good' cholesterol, maintain an ideal body weight and control any pathologies such as hypertension and diabetes, with the assistance of a doctor.
