What are the most common causes of vaginal infections?
Vaginal infections are a common problem among women of all ages. While some vaginal infections are accompanied by abnormal vaginal discharge, nearly 50% of them do not have these symptoms. The most common causes of vaginal infections are bacteria, yeast, and trichomonas (they may also be a combination of these infectious agents). Bacterial vaginosis, an infection of the vagina caused by certain bacteria, is more common than candida and trichomoniasis and is associated with a milky (thick), white-gray discharge and a fishy odor. It can cause complications, especially during pregnancy and childbirth, so it must be managed properly. Discharge caused by trichomoniasis is yellow-green, frothy (frothy), and is usually associated with a foul odor, vulvar itching, and painful urination. Both infections have a high pH. In contrast, vaginal pH in candida infections is usually normal. The discharge is white, thick and resembles fresh cheese (ricotta), without an unpleasant odor. Candida is associated with intense itching and burning in the vagina and vulvar area.

How does Gyno-Canestest work?
The normal pH of the vagina (pH is an indicator of acidity) can range from 3.5 to 4.5. Bacterial vaginosis and trichomonas infections, as well as non-infectious causes (including estrogen deficiency or menopause) cause an increase in vaginal pH.
With a change in color on the yellow tip of the swab, Gyno-Canestest indicates whether the pH of vaginal secretions is normal or high.
A positive test (color change to blue/green) indicates a high vaginal pH level.
A negative test (no color change) indicates a normal vaginal pH. The results are based on an indication of the pH level and have been shown to be more than 90% accurate in detecting changes in vaginal pH even in cases of watery discharge of varying levels. For other interpretations of the test, see the section “How to interpret the test results?”.

What precautions should be taken before using Gyno-Canestest?
1. To ensure the validity of the results, do not perform Gyno-Canestest in any of the following circumstances: (a) it is less than one day before your period or it is the day of your period; (b) there are signs of menstruation or vaginal bleeding; (c) less than 12 hours have passed since sexual intercourse or vaginal douching.
2. Do not insert the swab deeper than the manipulation point.
3. In case of pregnancy, Gyno-Canestest may indicate a leakage of amniotic fluid. If you are pregnant, consult your doctor before use, as the interpretation of the test results during pregnancy requires professional knowledge.

How is Gyno-Canestest used?
1. Discard the single Gyno-Canestest (swab).
2. Make sure the tip of the swab does not come into contact with any object before inserting it into the vaginal entrance.
3. Hold the Gyno-Canestest with your fingers on the swab holder (as shown in the figure).
4. Separate the outer flaps of skin to expose the vagina.
5. Gently insert the yellow tip of the Gyno-Canestest until your fingers reach the external skin of the vagina (about 5 cm into the vagina) and rotate the swab several times. Do not touch the entrance to the vagina.
6. Remove Gyno-Canestest from the vagina. Carefully avoid the tip coming into contact with any object and check that it has collected a visible amount of secretion.
7. Wait 10 seconds. Check the tip of the Gyno-Canestest for any color changes from yellow to blue or green. Caution: If blood spots appear on the Gyno-Canestest, ignore the results and consult your doctor.
8. Discard the Gyno-Canestest after use as with any other feminine hygiene product after checking the results. Do not flush it down the toilet.

How to interpret test results?
Color change to blue or green (positive result):
If after 10 seconds the tip turns blue or green, this most likely indicates the presence of a bacterial or trichomonal infection.
A milky (thick) white-gray discharge with a fishy odor may indicate bacterial vaginosis infection. You can consult your doctor or pharmacist for treatment information.
Yellow-green, frothy (frothy) discharge associated with foul odor and painful urination may indicate trichomoniasis. In this case, consult your doctor.
If you have any concerns, consult your doctor or other healthcare provider for advice.
A partial blue or green mark on the yellow indicator at the swab tip is considered a positive result.

Important: If the tip turns blue or green when you are pregnant, this may indicate a leak of amniotic fluid. See your doctor immediately.

No color change/swab remains yellow (negative result): If the tip has not changed color after 10 seconds, the likelihood of a bacterial or trichomonal infection is low. Thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge with no unpleasant odor may indicate a vaginal yeast infection, known as candidiasis. Consider using over-the-counter vaginal products such as antifungals.

Summary Table: The table below details the symptoms associated with bacterial, trichomonal, or yeast vaginal infections.

Report the results to your doctor
If you are confused or unsure about the appropriate treatment, ask your pharmacist for more information or, if in doubt, consult your doctor. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant.
