A callus is a localized thickening of the skin caused by repeated pressure or friction in one area, often on the foot. The body produces an excessive amount of skin cells in an attempt to protect itself from the pressure, forming a layer of hardened, dead skin. The continued pressure forces the dead skin cells into a characteristic shape, penetrating deeper layers of the skin. When the callus reaches nerve endings, it becomes painful.
The dimple provides relief by moving pressure away from the callus and toward the surrounding area. Hydrocolloid technology creates an optimal healing environment and deeply hydrates the callus, softening it for easier removal.
