Folate (folic acid) contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism; contributes to normal haematopoiesis and maternal tissue growth during pregnancy; supplemental folic acid increases maternal folate status; low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the fetus*.
*The target population is women of childbearing age; the beneficial effect is obtained by taking 400 mcg of folic acid daily, at least one month before and for three months after conception.
