Characteristics
The most efficient components of this synergy are meadowsweet, with a high salicylic acid content, and white willow, which is less rich but much better known.
The part used for medicinal purposes is the bark of 2-3 year old branches, whose chemical constituents are represented not only by salicylic glucosides (salicin, salicortin, populin, etc.), but also by flavonoids, catechins and tannins. The species Salix alba (White Willow), perhaps the best known from a botanical point of view.
- Willow bark, or rather its derivatives, are indicated as anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antipyretic, anticephalic, as they act selectively by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and the consequent synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for fever, inflammation and pain.
- Compared to acetylsalicylic acid, willow extract is generally better tolerated at gastric level, because the glucosides act as a slow-release form of the active ingredient, as they release saligenin through hydrolysis, which is then oxidized to salicylic acid only after absorption at intestinal level.
- The completeness of the synergy is achieved by using devil's claw which is a powerful anti-inflammatory particularly for the joints (antirheumatic, antiarthritic) and lemon balm which is antispasmodic, anti-anxiety, and, like Spirea, improves the quality of life.
