What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a very common vaginal condition. Normally, several types of bacteria live naturally in the vagina, with the largest numbers being lactobacilli. Lactobacilli produce acidifying lactic acid, maintain a physiologically low vaginal pH, and protect the vagina from infection. At this low pH, the growth of unwanted bacteria is usually inhibited.
